What it is

The Roots' fifth album, stretching hip-hop into rock, neo-soul, punk and electronic sound. "The Seed (2.0)", with Cody ChesnuTT, "Break You Off", with Musiq Soulchild, and "Water", a long piece about a troubled friend and former member, sit beside the poem "Complexity" with Jill Scott.

Why it matters

An adventurous album that widened hip-hop's sound. "The Seed (2.0)" became one of the Roots' best-known songs.
