Hymns in Syriac by Ephrem, a deacon of Nisibis and Edessa, gathered in cycles on paradise, faith, the Nativity, the church, and other themes. They teach theology through poetry, paradox, and images drawn from Scripture and nature, and many were written to be sung by choirs of women.
